Ray Charles was born on September 23, 1930, in Albany, Georgia. He was born to father, Bailey Robinson, and mother, Aretha Williams. His father left the family and his mother raised him alone. He started to lose his sight at the age of four or five and was completely blind by the age of seven. Ray attended school at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine. He developed more interest in music at the school and learned to play the piano there. He was just 14 years old when his mother died.

Charles then decided to move Los Angeles and spent the next few years touring. He was then signed by Swing Time Records where he recorded two more R&B hits. Finally, Ray began getting noticed in the music industry after all those years of hardships and was signed to Atlantic Records. From there, he went on to release numerous hit singles and albums. His life became much busier because of touring all over the country.
