American actor Jon Bernthal was born on 20 September 1977, in Washington, District of Columbia, USA as Jonathan Edward Bernthal. He is the son of Joan Lurie and Eric Lawrence Bernthal (Rick Bernthal), a lawyer with Latham & Watkins LLP. His paternal grandfather Murray Bernthal was musician and producer. He has two brothers, Nicholas and Thomas. His family is Jewish. Bernthal studied at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. He later attended The School of Moscow Art Theatre in Russia and he played professional baseball in the European Professional Baseball Federation during his time there.
He was discovered by the executive director of Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theater Training at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He graduated in 2002 from the American Repertory Theatre with a Master of Fine Arts.
Bernthal has performed in over 30 plays regionally and off-Broadway since 2002, including many of them with his own award-winning theatre company “Fovea Floods”. He also had small guest roles in television series like Boston Legal, CSI: Miami, How I Met Your Mother and many more among others. Bernthal got his first regular role on a television series on “The Class”, which was created by Friends co-creator David Crane. The show was cancelled after only one season. The same year he became a series regular on the television series Eastwick. The series was cancelled after only one season. Bernthal portrayed Shane Walsh in Frank Darabont's The Walking Dead, based on the comic book series Walking Dead. He was a regular on the show until 2012, when his character was killed off and ended the role. He was nominated for the “Breakout Performance – Male” award at the 2011 Scream Awards for his performance. He appeared in the crime drama film Snitch in 2013. Bernthal reunited with Frank Darabont for the TNT series Mob City, in which he portrays Joe Teague, a police officer working in a corrupt 1940s Los Angeles. He also had supporting roles in the Martin Scorsese directed film “The Wolf of Wall Street” and the sports comedy film Grudge Match. He will star in the 2014 World War II film Fury.
